Originally from Chicago, Melanie Bacaling (MM ’15) is a stage director and artistic collaborator currently on the directing staff at the Metropolitan Opera and Santa Fe Opera. Her work focuses on creating inclusive, decolonized rehearsal spaces and reimagining how opera is made and shared.

She has directed and produced with companies including Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera, Seattle Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, and more. With BLO, she created We Need to Listen, a conversation series on racial equity in opera, and produced the podcast at its (s)core, amplifying BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ voices in the field.
