Ep. 29/What’s your Artistic Mission?
All things Inclusivity, Healing and Impact with Nina Evelyn
In this episode of Music on Mushrooms, I had the honor of sitting down with award-winning soprano and Certified Reiki Master, Nina Evelyn, to explore the intersection of performance, healing, and social change. Nina is a powerhouse of artistry and advocacy whose mission is to diversify the classical music canon by uplifting the works of Black composers. As a Certified Reiki Master in Usui Reiki Ryoho, she also supports fellow artists through spiritual wellness work, offering group healing sessions rooted in compassion and energetic restoration.
Together, we unpacked what it means to be a true changemaker in the classical music world—and how to lead from a place of authenticity, courage, and heart.
The Healing Power of Performance
Nina’s journey bridges the worlds of music and spirituality. In our conversation, she spoke about how Reiki principles—like “Just for today, I will not worry”—have transformed her experience onstage, allowing her to release anxiety and perform with presence and peace.
Beyond Performative Inclusivity
Nina powerfully names the difference between performative inclusivity and making meaningful, sustained changes in programming. Her artistic mission center works by Black composers as an act of honoring her lineage. She reminds us that true equity requires more than intention—it demands alignment and consistent action.
Creating Safe Spaces for Artists
Both of us share a passion for creating spaces where artists can heal and grow. Nina described the magic of group healing workshops for musicians. Through our work with Soul Recharge, we offer a space to explore shadow work, reconnect with purpose, and deepen artistic expression. We agree that trauma-informed support and heart-centered community are essential ingredients in building a more compassionate music world.
Courage, Mentorship, and Mission
Nina’s sense of mission & purpose drives her work today, whether she’s giving lectures on underrepresented repertoire or guiding others through healing work. Her advice for artists is to define your mission and let it guide your decisions. When your work is aligned with your values, it becomes a force for change.
We dive into what it really means to be a changemaker in a tradition-bound industry—from programming underrepresented composers to using Reiki as a tool for grounded, heart-centered performance.
